The importance of social connection: Life Enrichment at SpringBrook February 2025

Published On: February 3rd, 2025|Categories: Blog|

At Springbrook, we take social connections and interactions very seriously.   Meaningful social connections are vital in empowering residents and helping contribute to a fulfilling and enriching living experience.

As we age, the likelihood of social isolation increases, which can negatively impact our self-esteem, as well as our physical and mental well-being. Prolonged social isolation can lead to heightened risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety, and depression.  However, research indicates that social interaction significantly reduces stress, anxiety, and depression by providing a sense of purpose and community.

Here at SpringBrook, we have two life enrichment programs that emphasize different activities based on the location, acuity, and cognition of residents.

  • In Independent and Assisted Living, we offer a wide variety of large-scale events throughout the month, such as birthday celebrations, happy hours, live entertainment, and holiday parties. Additionally, we provide daily small group activities, such as games, crafts, trivia, manicures, and bingo. Both events encourage residents to engage and build connections with their peers.  We also take surveys annually to assess residents’ interest and revamp our programs as needed.
  • Springbrook Memory Care residents have one or two simple group activities each day. Group activities do not focus on a task, rather they emphasize finding joy in the moment and stimulating social interaction and conversation.   Residents are also provided with one-on-one specialized visits that are designed specifically for each person’s special interests, hobbies, or life history.  These special visits enhance not only cognition, but they encourage residents to explore and provide a greater sense of purpose, dignity, and acceptance.

When looking for an Assisted Living Facility,  ask about the Activity Program.  Can residents give input on what they would like to do?  Is there ample space for larger group events?  How often is the activity calendar updated?  Answers to these questions will help you better understand if a facility is a good fit for you or your loved one.
