Not All Wounds Are Visible – Veterans & PTSD Awareness
Veterans Day is the time to thank those individuals who served in the Armed Forces for protecting our freedom. Many have been in combat situations and have had long-lasting effects from this.
Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD as it is often called can develop at any age. This develops in individuals who have experienced shocking, scary, or dangerous events. Those who consistently experience problems may be diagnosed with PTSD. People with PTSD may feel stressed or frightened even when they are not in danger.
Anyone can develop PTSD at any age which may be chronic. Keep in mind that as individuals with PTSD age their symptoms may be worse. Waking residents from a sound sleep, startling them by speaking to them behind their backs instead of face to face, or entering their apartment without knocking are all actions that may cause PTSD stress. The resident may react in an angry outburst and physically lash out. It is not their intention to harm you but to keep what they believe to be a dangerous person away.
Although you may think that a resident would enjoy an activity it may be too congested or noisy for them to attend. Respect their decision to not participate. Violent television programs can also be a trigger for those with PTSD. Ask the resident if he or she would like to watch something different.
Most people with PTSD will not openly talk about the words, objects, or situations that trigger their anxiety and stress levels. Respect their wishes and allow them to share as they are comfortable.
To our Veterans at SpringBrook, we say thank you for your service.
